You will automatically be enrolled on the course in Canvas once you have registered for your course in Ladok. You are most welcome to the course leadership and gender. We look forward cooperating with you!

The aim of this course is to provide students with theoretical knowledge of leadership, from a gender perspective. The main goal of the course is to give students the possibility to understand why gender issues are important for organisations, the leadership, the individual and the society. Whether you work in Sweden, or in the international context, understanding the role of gender in business and critically discuss its importance.

After finishing the course, the students should have theoretical knowledge of leadership, from a gender perspective and be able between others to:

*Demonstrate knowledge on Theories and key concepts of leadership in a gender perspective *Analyse critically and examine organisations and the role of gender in a historical and contemporary times perspective

*Demonstrate methodological knowledge and be exposed in current research in the field of leadership and gender

*Autonomously identify and formulate problems assessing the importance of gender in managing business *Demonstrate ability in critical thinking, independent work, teamwork, research and oral and written communication skills with different audiences

*Demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research work and its role for business and society

*Demonstrate the ability to identify personal needs for further knowledge and take responsibility for the own learning.

This is a half-time course with a weight of 7.5 ECTS points (European Credit Transfer System). The course runs between week 36 and week 45, 2019.

As most contacts, assignments, submissions and results will be announced on Canvas, it is recommended that you get enrolled at Canvas, as a course participant in the course LEADERSHIP AND GENDER, HT 19. You do not need a password. Please check the course timetable often as there may be changes in the planning from time to time.

You will work individually and in teams in this course to accomplish assignments. Each team/group should consist of three-to five students. We will build the groups during the first day we meet, the 2nd of September, 9-17. The same groups will work with all assignments. The groups should consist of students from different countries, different sexes and ages.

This course has six examination moments and as a participant, you need to pass all of them. For passing an exam, it is required to get minimum 50% of the maximum points. In teamwork, the group will be graded together. However, failing to participate properly in the teamwork may need an individual to do extra assignment. We evaluate individual performance during all assignments, discussions and the group work. We add the scores from exams for the final grading, calculated on a total of 100 points.

We divide the major elements of this course as following:

(1) Chapter Analysis Seminar, individual assignment based on a chapter in the course books, gives maximum 5 points

(2) Case seminar, based on cases about leadership, gender and power, gives maximum 9 points

(3) Article seminar, based on recent journal publications, gives maximum 9 points

(4) Research work Seminar, based on interviews or questionnaires and contacts with employees in different positions, branches and organisations, gives maximum 23 points

(5) Written examination on the literature, gives maximum 50 points. This is a home examination meaning that you work at home or in the library and are allowed to have all literature available. This is an individual examination where you must show your knowledge and critical thinking.

(6) Individual Attendance and Blog, gives 4 points.

You will upload all assignments on Canvas under safe assign following the timetable. You should upload all rest assignments latest week 45.

Written exams

Written exams

Registration for exams, including re-takes, is mandatory. You can register for exams via Ladok. You need to register at least ten days before the exam date. If you fail to register you will only be able to sit your exam if there is a n empty place in the exam hall.

If you are a distance study student and want to take your exam off-campus, you need to apply to do so at least three weeks prior to the exam date.

After your course has finished you will be sent a we-based course evaluation questionnaire via e-mail. Your participation in the course evaluation is very valuable to us and you comments will help improve and develop the course further. All students registered on the course will receive a report of the course evaluation with all comments compiled.

You need to apply for accommodation yourself. Please remember to do it in good time before your arrival. The University of Gävle does not provide any student accommodation.

Free Microsoft Office

As a student at the University of Gävle you have the opportunity to install
Microsoft Office on up to five computers. The Office package includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Onenote.

  • Library

The library is located in the middle of campus and is open to everybody. You can reach all digital resources such as e-books and e-journals after logging in with your user account.

  • Residence permit
    • If you are a non-EU citizen you need to apply for a residence permit. Start the process of applying for a residence permit as soon as possible. This can be a slow process and take several months. It is therefore good to get started as soon as possible!

Student Centre

At the Student Centre you will meet knowledgeable staff that can assist you in just about anything regarding your studies at the University of Gävle. The Student Centre is located in building 22. You will also find a café in this area and TV displays showing current information and the daily timetabling.   • Zoom are a services for web meetings at the University of Gävle. You usually need a webcam and headset with a microphone.

Wireless network (wifi)

Eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) gives you access to the Internet when you are staying on the University campus. It also provides internet access at other universities and colleges that are connected to eduroam. Eduroam also works at many airports, railway stations and hotels.
