The Degree of Master of Engineering in Land Surveying at the University of Gävle is completely unique in Sweden. The programme gives the students expertise in geodata, and such skills are not only becoming increasingly important in our connected lives but are essential to tackle many of the societal challenges we are facing today. Geodata is computerized geographical information used in technical equipment every day.
The fact that geodata is essential when we use the map function on our mobile phones may seem self-evident, but many other apps and units use geodata to provide us with specific information based on our location. In some cases, the units need such information to function. Moreover, accurate and detailed geodata will be a precondition in our use of autonomous vehicles.
The Degree of Master of Engineering in Land Surveying is a five-year long programme with specializations in the gathering and analysis of geodata. Geodata is important to society; it is used in producing maps, dividing lands and in providing us with information about how our planet is changing – how the glaciers are melting, the sea levels rising, and it is also used in identifying flood risks.
By measuring, analysing and visualizing geodata, we can for example develop our ways of constructing and adapting sustainable cities to meet the challenges we face. As an expert on geodata, you can make useful contributions to society and take an active part in building the future.
Global trends like digitalisation, urbanisation and climate change adaptation create a need for experts with innovation skills that can enhance the understanding of geodata in the foreseeable future. With a Degree of Master of Engineering in Land Surveying, you will be very attractive on the job market. You may work at Lantmäteriet, (the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority), in public authorities and in municipalities or in businesses that need experts to develop products and services. Moreover, the prospects for working abroad are good, either as a consultant or in international collaborations.
