Course organisation

The course is divided into two sections. Please pay attention to the separate course codes which are needed in order to register. You need to enroll in both sections.

To give you an overview of the work we will do, the course structure looks like the following:

English I for teachers in grades 4-6 ENG 509 (wks. 36-45)

Module 3. 0030 Contemporary English literature, 3 credits (wks. 42-45)

English II for teachers in grades 4-6 ENG 510 (wks.46-03)

Module 1. 0010 Children's and youth literature, 4 credits (wks. 46-50)
Module 2. 0020 English didactics, 9 credits (wks. 46-03)
Module 3. 0030 World English, 2 credits (wks. 51-03)

Teaching will start on Tuesday, 4 September between 9.30 a.m.-12 a.m. on Adobe where we will go straight into the basic language structure and phonology module. The ‘room’ on Adobe will be available from 9.10 a.m. A more detailed time table will be posted on Blackboard later on. The modules will be taught parallel which means that you will be studying two modules at the same time (see weeks above). This means that you will need to have obtained the course literature for modules 0010 and 0020 before the course starts. You will be expected to have read/studied certain areas of the literature before the first seminar. Generally throughout the course, it is important that you get hold of the literature well in time for the relevant sessions. If you find it difficult to find a particular title within Sweden, ordering it from an international site, such as www.amazon.co.uk is one suggestion. There you might also be able to find the titles second hand for a good price.

Students attending courses in English at the University of Gävle are required to attend class in order to receive a passing grade. Studying English at our college does not only involve obtaining subject knowledge, but also improving one’s ability to speak and write English, and this can only take place if students meet their teachers and actively participate in the instruction. Furthermore, most modules feature live, face-to-face, group work in order to accommodate the general course objective that “students should be able to compare and critically evaluate one’s own and others' work”. Failure to participate in such activities will therefore make it impossible to attain a course objective. For these reasons, we require attendance, with only minor exceptions.

There will be one on-campus meeting within this course. The meeting takes place within the module English didactics and is held on Tuesday, 15 January 2019.
Since this is a full-time course, you must be prepared to allocate 40 hours of study per week, including class attendance, reading and writing assignments. Studying for 30 credits in one term is like a full-time job.

Communication

It is important that you register on Blackboard which will be our main channel for communication. This is where you will find material about our course such as the time table, instructions, assignments, power point presentations etc. This is also where the different instructors will post general announcements concerning the course and the individual sessions.

Secondly, since our course is digitally based it means that we will not meet physically but instead we will meet via Adobe connect. For us all to be able to benefit from a good quality of reception it is recommended that you use broadband and not a wireless connection. It is also important that you use a good headset with a microphone instead of the microphone on the computer only. This way you will be able to hear us and we can hear you much better. A good camera is also essential for communicative purposes. Please note that you are expected to use your microphone and camera throughout the course since several of the course modules includes seminars where you are to participate in discussions. Unfortunately Ipads and Iphones do not work sufficiently for this activity.

When it is time for us to meet, a link to the classroom will be posted under ‘announcements’ on Blackboard. You click on the link and follow the instructions to the classroom. As mentioned before, participation in these sessions via Adobe is an essential part of the course. Even though we do not meet physically you shall think of it as equivalent to classroom teaching which means that an active contribution is beneficial for everyone.

Finally, the syllabus (kursplan) is a legally binding document for teachers and students alike. Students should therefore refrain from requesting instructors to change the course content or shorten the reading list, for example.

Övrig information
Cheating and plagiarizing are serious academic offences, which result in failing the module in question and being reported to the college’s disciplinary commission. To learn about plagiarism and get basic information on how to avoid it, please read this disclaimer carefully before the beginning of the course; print it, sign it, make a copy/take a picture, and upload it to Blackboard.

Written exams

Registration for exams, including re-takes, is mandatory. You can register for exams via Ladok. You need to register at least ten days before the exam date. If you fail to register you will only be able to sit your exam if there is a n empty place in the exam hall.

If you are a distance study student and want to take your exam off-campus, you need to apply to do so at least three weeks prior to the exam date.

After your course has finished you will be sent a we-based course evaluation questionnaire via e-mail. Your participation in the course evaluation is very valuable to us and you comments will help improve and develop the course further. All students registered on the course will receive a report of the course evaluation with all comments compiled.

The Student Centre
At the Student Centre you will meet knowledgeable staff who can assist you in just about anything regarding your studies at the University of Gävle. The Student Centre is located in building 22. Web meetings with Adobe Connect or Zoom
Adobe Connect and Zoom are two services for web meetings at the University of Gävle. You usually need a webcam and headset with a microphone.
