Welcome to ENG308 English 31-60hp Distance 50%

For all students attending this course: We will have our first registration meeting on Tuesday 4 September at 16:00. The link to the Adobe Connect site for this meeting will be posted on Blackboard 30 minutes before the meeting begins. You must attend this meeting to register for the course. If you have problems, contact me at mmo@hig.se.

The course will begin in week 36, and continue up to week 03 in January 2018. All of the meetings will be held on-line using Adobe Connect. Students must have a working camera and microphone. There is information about how to use Adobe Connect on the college website. Students are expected to attend the meetings. It is not possible to pass this course without attending the meetings and actively participating there. If you cannot attend, it is recommended that you withdraw from the course and take the course when you can participate in the meetings.

The course is broken up into two ten-week periods. The survey course in British Literature will run in the first ten weeks, from week 36 to week 45. This course will meet every Tuesday afternoon at 16:00 to 17:30. I will be your teacher for this module. In total there will be eight meetings for the British Literature module.

In the second two-week period, from week 46 to 03, there will be two modules on offer. A course in Linguistics called Topics in Linguistics (4 hp), and a course in Translation for 3.5 hp. The schedules for these two modules will be posted on Blackboard in the fall. In total there will be approximately ten to fifteen meetings for these two modules.

In this course, there is focus on the students' ability to express themselves in broad terms and in correct English in both the linguistic and literary disciplines. Students are provided with an opportunity to understand the development of American and British literature in an historic perspective, with a focus on the relationship between form and content, the interrelatedness of literary texts, and the complex links between these texts and their historical contexts. The study of literary terminology continues with an introduction to such concepts of literary criticism as “canon”, “Self”, “discourse”, and “historicity”. Moreover, there is a comprehensive review of central aspects of linguistics, focusing on syntax, morphology, phonetics and phonology, semantics, sociolinguistics and pragmatics as well as language didactics and language acquisition and an overview of the history of the English language. An overview of the main linguistics research methods is presented along with a closer study of the main concepts in syntax. Students are given an opportunity to apply knowledge of linguistic topics and research methods by applying a research method to analyze a particular linguistic topic. The results are presented in an analytical essay which enables practice in scientific writing. writing.

Each module will have on-line meetings that students must attend. There are assignments which must be handed in on time, and final exams, usually take-home exams, at the end of the modules. We will be working in Blackboard, as well as in Adobe Connect, so it is important that students learn how to use these applications.

After completion of your course a web-based course evaluation questionnaire will be sent to your HiG e-mail address. Your answers in the course evaluation are very valuable and your comments will help us to improve and to develop the course for the next implementation. All students registered on the course will receive a course evaluation report where all answers are compiled.

Communication

Students attending courses in English at the University of Gävle are required to attend class in order to receive a passing grade. Studying English at our college does not only involve obtaining subject knowledge, but also improving one’s ability to speak and write English, and this can only take place if students meet their teachers and actively participate in the instruction. Furthermore, most modules feature live, face-to-face, group work in order to accommodate the general course objective that “students should be able to compare and critically evaluate one’s own and others' work”. Failure to participate in such activities will therefore make it impossible to attain a course objective. For these reasons, we require attendance, with only minor exceptions.

All the meetings for this course are online; most of our classes will take place in "online classrooms" via the web conferencing system Adobe Connect Pro. Access to the digital classrooms will be provided through links posted on the course site on Blackboard, and you do not need to download any special software. Please note that you need to have a headset, a microphone and a webcam to be able to fully participate in our Adobe Connect sessions. On Blackboard, you will find specific information, such as detailed course descriptions, class schedule, teaching materials, course requirements and assignments. A great part of your work will be carried out via Blackboard, too. It is therefore essential that you enroll in the course on Blackboard as soon as you have been assigned a student account (keep in mind that course registration and enrollment in the course on Blackboard are separate things). Follow the instructions under the heading “Five steps to get started”. Once the module has started, you should check the course site on Blackboard on a daily basis. Important information will be posted by your instructors on the first page of the course site (as “Announcements”).
The syllabus (kursplan) is a legally binding document for teachers and students alike. Students should therefore refrain from requesting instructors to change the course content or shorten the reading list, for example.

Written exams

Registration for exams, including re-takes, is mandatory. You can register for exams via Ladok. You need to register at least ten days before the exam date. If you fail to register you will only be able to sit your exam if there is a n empty place in the exam hall.

If you are a distance study student and want to take your exam off-campus, you need to apply to do so at least three weeks prior to the exam date.
