If you do not register on time, you will lose your place on the course. Please contact your course administrator before the end of the registration period if you are experiencing problems with course registration.
If you are conditionally admitted you are not able to register on the course yourself.
Period for course registration: 17 August - 30 August and 26 October - 8 November
The course is divided into two sections. Please pay attention to the separate course codes which are needed in order to register. You need to enroll in both sections.

Welcome to English 1 for teachers 4-6! My name is Susanne Greés and I will be your course coordinator for ENG519 and ENG520, and I can be contacted on Susanne.firstname.lastname@example.org. Teaching will start week 36 on Zoom on Monday August 31, 10-12 with Basic language structure, and your instructor will be Henrik.kaatari@hig,se. Parallel to that module you will also study English language proficiency starting on Wednesday September 2, 10-12 where your instructor will be Britta Bergstedt. A more detailed study guide will be posted on Canvas in due time. The modules will be taught in parallel which means that you will be studying two modules at the same time. This means that you need to have obtained the course literature for modules 0010 and 0020 before the course starts. The course literature for the first two modules are attached in this welcome letter. You will be expected to have read/studied certain areas of the literature before the first seminar. Throughout the course, it is important that you get hold of the literature well in time for the relevant sessions. If you find it difficult to find a particular title within Sweden, ordering it from an international site, such as www.amazon.co.uk is one suggestion. There you might also be able to find the titles second hand for a good price.
There will be one on-campus meeting within this course. The meeting takes place within the module English Didactics and is held in January 2021. More details will be provided closer to time.
You will find material about our course such as the time table, instructions, assignments, power point presentations etc. in our platform Canvas. This is also where the different instructors will post general announcements concerning the course and the individual sessions. The timetable for the first two modules will also be available on Kronox.
Since our course is digitally based it means that we will not meet physically but instead we will meet via Zoom. For us all to be able to benefit from a good quality of reception it is recommended that you use broadband and not a wireless connection. It is also important that you use a good headset with a microphone instead of the microphone on the computer only. A good camera is also essential for communicative purposes. Please note that you are expected to use your microphone and camera throughout the course since several of the course modules includes seminars where you are to participate in discussions.
Since this is a full-time course, you must be prepared to allocate 40 hours of study per week, including class attendance, reading and writing assignments. Studying for 30 credits in one term is like a full-time job.
Students attending courses in English at the University of Gävle are required to attend class in order to receive a passing grade. Studying English at our college does not only involve obtaining subject knowledge, but also improving one’s ability to speak and write English, and this can only take place if students meet their teachers and actively participate in the instruction. Furthermore, most modules feature live, face-to-face, group work in order to accommodate the general course objective that “students should be able to compare and critically evaluate one’s own and others' work”. Failure to participate in such activities will therefore make it impossible to attain a course objective. For these reasons, we require attendance, with only minor exceptions.

From the autumn semester 2020, Canvas will replace the University's current learning management system Blackboard. You will automatically be enrolled on the course in Canvas once you have registered for your course in Ladok. Please note that it can take up to 60 minutes for the systems to synchronise but after that you will be able to see your course in Canvas.
Cheating and plagiarizing are serious academic offences, which result in failing the module in question and being reported to the college’s disciplinary commission. To learn about plagiarism and get basic information on how to avoid it, please read this disclaimer carefully before the beginning of the course; print it, sign it, make a copy/take a picture, and upload it to Canvas under 'Assignments'.
Registration for exams, including re-takes, is mandatory. You can register for exams via Ladok. You need to register at least ten days before the exam date. If you fail to register you will only be able to sit your exam if there is a n empty place in the exam hall.
If you are a distance study student and want to take your exam off-campus, you need to apply to do so at least three weeks prior to the exam date.
After your course has finished you will be sent a we-based course evaluation questionnaire via e-mail. Your participation in the course evaluation is very valuable to us and you comments will help improve and develop the course further. All students registered on the course will receive a report of the course evaluation with all comments compiled.
You need to apply for accommodation yourself. Please remember to do it in good time before your arrival. The University of Gävle does not provide any student accommodation.
As a student at the University of Gävle you have the opportunity to install
Microsoft Office on up to five computers. The Office package includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Onenote.
The library is located in the middle of campus and is open to everybody. You can reach all digital resources such as e-books and e-journals after logging in with your user account.
At the Student Centre you will meet knowledgeable staff that can assist you in just about anything regarding your studies at the University of Gävle. The Student Centre is located in building 22. You will also find a café in this area and TV displays showing current information and the daily timetabling. Eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) gives you access to the Internet when you are staying on the University campus. It also provides internet access at other universities and colleges that are connected to eduroam. Eduroam also works at many airports, railway stations and hotels.
