Your full commitment to studying this course is crucial. If you have registered but changed your mind about studying this course, you should immediately inform our administrator, Monika Karlsson (firstname.lastname@example.org), that you wish to be removed from the course list; there are applicants on the reserve list who could be admitted to the course within the first two weeks of the fall semester (weeks 36 and 37). If you continue to be registered with the course without being an active student, that is, without attending classes and submitting assignments and other types of work to Blackboard, everybody loses, but especially those applicants on the reserve list who might have had a chance to be admitted to the course. We have scheduled a "roll-call" session on Friday, August 28, at 15:00. The session will be online on Zoom. You only need to copy this link to your browser https://hig-se.zoom.us/j/223540669 and have your microphones and webcams ready. Attendance to the roll call session is mandatory. If you cannot attend but are committed to studying this course, contact me via e-mail (email@example.com) before the meeting takes place and briefly explain in writing why you want to study English.
This fall semester, you will be studying two modules as follows: “Language Structure” will be taught in the first part of the semester (weeks 36-45 or period 1) and “Written Communication” will be taught in the second half of the semester (weeks 46-03, period 2). In the spring semester, you will study “Contemporary Literature in English”, “Culture, Ethnicity, and Identity”, and “World English”. These are called modules for administrative purposes, but, since they cover quite different areas, are taught by different lecturers, and are assigned a number of credits each, they enjoy a certain degree of autonomy, which justifies referring to them as “courses”, in everyday speech.
You will study Language Structure together with students enrolled in the Teacher Training Program. Language Structure ends with a written exam on the HiG campus or at any authorized exam location, but, in keeping with the principles of continuous assessment, all modules feature compulsory written assignments (examinerande uppgifter) throughout their respective periods. More information about the content and assessment procedures for individual modules will be published by the instructors on the course site in Canvas. Both modules include student participation in their assessment procedures. The teaching usually consists of lectures and seminars, but each module has its own structure and policy with respect to the forms of teaching. For example, Written Communication has virtually no lectures, given its focus on writing practice, while Language Structure features both lectures and seminars. You should order all your course books in good time. A good idea is to get hold of the books indicated in the syllabus (kursplan) during the summer vacation.
Students attending courses in English at the University of Gävle are required to attend class in order to receive a passing grade. Studying English at our college does not only involve obtaining subject knowledge, but also improving one’s ability to speak and write English, and this can only take place if students meet their teachers and actively participate in the instruction. Furthermore, most modules feature live, face-to-face, group work in order to accommodate the general course objective that “students should be able to compare and critically evaluate one’s own and others' work”. Failure to participate in such activities will therefore make it impossible to attain a course objective. For these reasons, we require attendance, with only minor exceptions. To take exams and pass the course, students must attend at least eight seminars in each of the 7.5 cr. modules (Language Structure and Written Communication).
It is important that you register in Canvas which will be our main channel for communication. This is where you will find material about our course such as the time table, instructions, assignments, etc. This is also where the different instructors will post general announcements concerning the course and the individual sessions. Your instructors will use the email client to send individual messages when necessary. Therefore, check the Canvas page and your email regularly.
Secondly, we will meet in a virtual classroom using Zoom. Information on how to access this classroom will be posted in Canvas. For us all to be able to benefit from a good quality of reception it is recommended that you use broadband and not a wireless connection. It is also important that you use a good headset with a microphone instead of the microphone on the computer only. A good camera is also essential for communicative purposes. Unfortunately, iPads and iPhones do not work sufficiently for this activity.

From the autumn semester 2020, Canvas will replace the University's current learning management system Blackboard. You will automatically be enrolled on the course in Canvas once you have registered for your course in Ladok. Please note that it can take up to 60 minutes for the systems to synchronise but after that you will be able to see your course in Canvas.
Cheating and plagiarizing are serious academic offences, which result in failing the module in question and being reported to the college’s disciplinary commission. To learn about plagiarism and get basic information on how to avoid it, please read the disclaimer posted on Blackboard carefully before the beginning of the course; print it, sign it, make a copy/take a picture, and upload it to Canvas.
Registration for exams, including re-takes, is mandatory. You can register for exams via Ladok. You need to register at least ten days before the exam date. If you fail to register you will only be able to sit your exam if there is a n empty place in the exam hall.
If you are a distance study student and want to take your exam off-campus, you need to apply to do so at least three weeks prior to the exam date.
After your course has finished you will be sent a we-based course evaluation questionnaire via e-mail. Your participation in the course evaluation is very valuable to us and you comments will help improve and develop the course further. All students registered on the course will receive a report of the course evaluation with all comments compiled.
You need to apply for accommodation yourself. Please remember to do it in good time before your arrival. The University of Gävle does not provide any student accommodation.
As a student at the University of Gävle you have the opportunity to install
Microsoft Office on up to five computers. The Office package includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Onenote.
The library is located in the middle of campus and is open to everybody. You can reach all digital resources such as e-books and e-journals after logging in with your user account.
At the Student Centre you will meet knowledgeable staff that can assist you in just about anything regarding your studies at the University of Gävle. The Student Centre is located in building 22. You will also find a café in this area and TV displays showing current information and the daily timetabling. Eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) gives you access to the Internet when you are staying on the University campus. It also provides internet access at other universities and colleges that are connected to eduroam. Eduroam also works at many airports, railway stations and hotels.
