Niclas Björsell har en Fil.kand. i elektronik (1994) och en Fil.lic. i reglerteknik (1998) från Uppsala Universitet samt Tekn.dr. i telekommunikation (2007) från Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH). År 2012 utnämndes han till docent i telekommunikation vid KTH.

I mer än 30 år har han innehaft positioner i akademin såväl som inom industrin. Han har över 20 års erfarenhet från forsknings- och utvecklingsprojekt, både nationellt och internationellt och främst i samarbeten mellan näringslivet och akademin. För närvarande är han lektor vid Högskolan i Gävle och ämnesansvarig för elektronikämnet samt utbildningsledare för utbildningsprogrammet Automationsingenjör Co-op. Han har publicerat mer än 70 artiklar i internationella peer-review-tidskrifter och konferenser och hans forskningsintressen omfattar radiomätteknik, analog-till-digital-omvandling, icke-linjära system, trådlös kommunikation och automation.

Dr Björsell är biträdande redaktör för IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, anlitad som granskare för flera tidskrifter och konferenser och aktiv medlem av Waveform Generation, Measurement and Analysis Committee (IEEE, Instrumentation and Measurement).
